About Me
Matt Bettelman is a Game Designer with over 18 years of experience making AAA games, spanning traditional single player and co-op campaigns, live service games, cutting edge VR experiences and everything in between. He has extensive experience in mission design, encounter design, systems design, level design and even UI/UX design. Over the course of his career he has fulfilled roles as an individual contributor, lead designer, and game director.
Matt began his career in game development at High Moon Studios (Carlsbad, California) in 2006. He was initially hired as product analyst, and helped the studio ship Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Conspiracy. He utilized this opportunity as a tester embedded at a high profile game development studio by learning everything he could about the Unreal Engine and High Moon’s other proprietary development tools. After proving himself by making a demo level in the Bourne Conspiracy engine, in 2008 he was invited to join the ranks of High Moon’s talented design team. He worked as an associate designer and made campaign levels for Transformers: War for Cybertron, which shipped in 2010. Later, he was promoted to game designer and owned multiple campaign levels for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, which shipped in 2012.
Just before shipping Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, Matt took a role at Treyarch. During his nearly 6 years at Treyarch (Santa Monica, California), he worked as a scripter on campaign levels and DLC zombies maps for both Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. He also contributed to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 as a systems designer.
Before Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 shipped, Matt ended his 10+ year tenure at Activision owned studios and jumped into the world of VR game development at Survios in 2018. As a Senior Game Designer, Matt worked with proprietary procedural generation tools to contribute level design to The Walking Dead Onslaught. Eventually Matt was asked to contribute to an untitled wrestling themed VR project as a Lead Game Designer. The project got cancelled at the start of the pandemic in 2020, so Survios pivoted and made Matt the Game Director of both Puzzle Bobble VR: Vacation Odyssey for Oculus and Puzzle Bobble 3D: Vacation Odyssey for PS4/PS5/PSVR.
Matt was leading the Player Systems team on the project that would eventually become Alien: Rogue Incursion before departing Survios in late 2022. At that time, Epic Games hired Matt as a Senior Designer (Quests) for Lego Fortnite. There, Matt became a leader and the subject matter expert for implementing encounters, objectives, and gameplay events in the huge, procedurally generated open world of Lego Fortnite Odyssey.
Matt attended the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science, as well as minors in both Business and Mathematics.
