I had the opportunity to script a bunch of fun features for the zombies map Zestubou no Shima. The majority of my time was spent designing and scripting a series of plants the player can grow from seeds that drop off of killed zombies. Additionally, I scripted several easter egg quests as well as a few wild easter egg rewards, like a player-controlled spider.
Designing and scripting the plants in Zetsubou no Shima was a really fun exercise. Players must plant seeds in designated planters. Watering them with different sources of water will affect the type of plant they will ultimately grow. The plants provide a variety of utilities to the players who take the time and effort to grow them. Some attract and kill zombies, some give the players small rewards like points or weapons. My favorite plant, affectionately dubbed the “babysitter plant”, will grab a zombie and hold it in place, giving the player the opportunity to explore the map and attempt to complete easter egg quests.
One of the hallmarks of Call of Duty zombies maps are the elaborate ”easter egg” quests that require players to fully explore these maps and their unique elements. For Zetsubou no Shima, I had the pleasure of creating a playable version of the map’s unique Spider enemy. Designing and scripting the Spider, as well as the quest players must complete to find it, was one of my favorite experiences of working on this map.
